There is no global consensus on the definition of elderly people. This definition may vary based on cultural, social, economic and health factors. This demonstrates that Brazil adopts an age definition for elderly people that aligns with the criteria adopted in developing countries by the UN. Aging presents challenges and opportunities, which could increase demand for primary health care and long-term care and require a larger, better-trained workforce. Elderly people living in rural areas face serious physical barriers, such as : lack of public transport, long waiting times for appointments, among others.
