BIG AREA: Ciências Humanas
AREA: Geografia
SUMMARY:

Brazil is undergoing a constant and accelerated process of population aging. To varying degrees, the Brazilian capitals are experiencing the same process. Studies by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) indicate that by 2060 the number of elderly people (over 60) will reach 25.5% of the Brazilian population. The increase in life expectancy represents an important social achievement and is the result, among other factors, of social determinants, improvements in living conditions, including the "expansion of access to medical services. In this way, understanding the dynamics, challenges and opportunities associated with the presence of older people in cities is fundamental to guiding public policies and actions that guarantee dignified and quality ageing for this section of the population, considering that population ageing, characterized by an increase in the proportion of older people in society, has profound impacts on various areas of economic, social and political life. Thus, this research seeks to analyze the aging process of the population of Boa Vista-RR, examining demographic projections, with the contextualization of aging in contemporary society, with a view to identifying public policies aimed at the elderly population implemented in the municipality. The methodological approach of this research is quantitative and qualitative (mixed). The time frame for data and projections will cover the period between 2000 and 2022, and population projections for 2060, taking into account the availability of data from the Population Census (IBGE); the Ministry of Health (Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System - Datasus) and the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA). We hope to contribute to a deeper understanding of this reality and provide a basis for guiding public policies and initiatives that promote healthy and dignified ageing for older people, contributing to the promotion of inclusive and fair cities.
