SUMMARY:

This paper investigates the use of fantastic tales in the teaching of Portuguese as an L2 to deaf students in elementary school. The general objective is to analyze the use of the fantastic tale genre in contributing to teaching Portuguese in elementary school as L2 for the deaf, in Boa Vista, Roraima. The research has a qualitative/quantitative approach, with emphasis on qualitative research for data analysis (CRESWELL, 2010). The collection techniques used are: a Likert scale questionnaire based on the guidelines of Creswell (2007); and a systematic literature review, based on the guidelines of Salvador (1986). The analysis methodology comprises the following methods: comparative statistical (GUEDES et al, 2005); descriptive and exploratory statistical (LAKATOS; MARCONI, 2003); deductive method and inductive method (MORAES, 2003). The partial results of the analysis show that a) the teachers are unaware of the nature of Libras and its organization as a language: b) the teachers are also unaware of the identity elements that are part of deaf culture and, consequently, deaf identity, as well as revealing signs of the clinical-therareutic perspective in relation to the deaf population: c) the teachers have not had access te continuing training aimed at teaching short stories to deaf students, but are interested in taking part. In the final remarks we highlight the needs of teachers in terms of continuing training in order to ensure the inclusion of deaf students and reflect on the production of a teaching manual aimed at the use of fantastic tales in teaching Portuguese as an L2 for the deaf.
